Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - Non-Resident Companies.

Liz McManus

Question:

54 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Finance the progress, if any, made regarding the promised review of legislation governing Irish registered non-resident companies; when he expects to be in a position to bring legislative proposals before Dáil Éireann; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9878/98]

As I recently indicated to the House, my Department and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment have been directed to expedite their examination of this issue with a view to developing, in consultation with the relevant bodies, a set of effective measures under company law, tax law and, if necessary, criminal justice law which will curb the misuse of Irish registered non-resident companies. Once this work is complete, the matter will be brought to the Government for decision on what action needs to be taken.

As the Deputy will appreciate, the issues involved are complex and it will be necessary to ensure that any measures adopted are enforceable and do not adversely affect legitimate business. Nevertheless, I am hopeful that the work currently under way can be accomplished and suitable measures introduced within a reasonable timeframe.
