Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - Job Creation.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

86 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the different criteria between the recently established enterprise project group for County Leitrim and the three previous Government task forces established to create employment in areas that had suffered major industrial job losses. [10002/98]

In the wake of the closure of Ballinamore Textiles Limited, which exacerbated the unemployment situation in County Leitrim, I asked the Leitrim County Manager to convene a special enterprise project group to address the employment needs of the entire county. The group will focus on assessing the skills of the labour force in County Leitrim, the provision of appropriate training and maximising the potential for job creation and industrial development in the county.

Task forces and initiatives have been set up previously in response to major industrial closures in certain towns. The criteria for each task force varies according to the particular circumstances in each case. Their focus has been to address the employment needs of the towns or areas concerned. The Leitrim enterprise project group, however, will address the economic and employment development needs throughout the entire county.
