Vol. 490 No. 2

Written Answers - Harbours and Piers.

David Stanton

Question:

98 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources whether he has received a report on the condition of the breakwater at Ballycotton, County Cork; the works required to bring the breakwater up to an acceptable standard; the estimated cost of this work; when he will make resources available for the work to be carried out; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10136/98]

Cork County Council has not made any proposal to my Department concerning the breakwater at Ballycotton. In any event, the funding available for development works at fishery harbours is very limited and is necessarily focused in the main on a small number of strategic harbours. It is unlikely, therefore, that aid can be provided for works at Ballycotton in the short-term. The matter will, however, be kept under review, in consultation with Cork County Council, having regard to available funds.

Question:

99 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has received a report on the need to reconstruct the slipway at Knockadoon, Ballymacoda, County Cork; if so, the contents of this report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10137/98]

Question:

100 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the resources, if any, he intends to make available, or has made available, to enable the slipway in Knockadoon, Ballymacoda, County Cork to be reconstructed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10138/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 99 and 100 together.

The slipway at Knockadoon is owned by Cork County Council and responsibility for its repair and maintenance rests with the local authority.

My Department recently received from Cork County Council a consultant engineer's report on proposed modifications to Knockadoon Pier. While this report will be considered by my Department in the formulation of fishery harbour development programmes, it is unlikely, given the limited funding available and the need to focus available moneys primarily on key strategic fishery harbours, that aid can be provided for works at Knockadoon in the near future.
