Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Movement of Cattle.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

149 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when his Department intends to abolish the female cattle movement system which he promised to do at the end of 1997. [10744/98]

The movement permit system for female cattle going for slaughter and export was introduced from September 1996 in the context of providing reassurance to consumers and customers in the aftermath of the BSE crisis. I am currently reviewing the operation of the system in the light of developments since its introduction.
