Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

194 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the increase, if any, there has been in the waiting lists for elderly public patients in the Waterford area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10631/98]

I have been informed by the South Eastern Health Board that the position in relation to waiting lists for older people in the Waterford area is as follows:

Numbers at 31-3-97

Numbers at 31-3-98

Assessment and Rehabilitation

14

17

Extended Care

6

13

Total

20

30

The board also advise that a 27 bed unit at St. Joseph's, Dungarvan, is near completion and will be equipped and ready to open in early summer. The board is currently developing two additional rehabilitation beds in St. Patrick's Hospital and have further proposals for the upgrading of facilities at St. Joseph's.
It is expected that the provision of these facilities will help to alleviate the waiting list.
