Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Absenteeism.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

302 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 311 of 28 April 1998, he will instruct his inspector to carry out an informal survey to establish whether there is a problem with absenteeism in Dublin's second level schools on Fridays; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10597/98]

My Department is currently considering the complex issues involved in school absenteeism as part of the review of the School Attendance Act, l926.

As I stated in my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 311 of 28 April 1998 it is my intention to establish a mechanism for the purpose of quantifying the number of students who fall outside the education system. I will be consulting with the partners in education concerning the type of measures required to quantify, on a comprehensive basis, the number of pupils out of school.
