Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Building Society Regulation.

Jim Higgins

Question:

51 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason that the mutuality principle is not being applied to a building society (details supplied). [9541/98]

The building society referred to by the Deputy is a mutual building society in accordance with the Building Societies Act, 1989, whereby the ownership of the society is, in effect, vested in its members.

The Central Bank is the regulatory authority in relation to building societies under the 1989 Act.
