Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Placenames Anglicisation.

Willie Penrose

Question:

56 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on the growing anglicisation of street names and sub-urban estates; the contact, if any, he has had with local authorities on this matter; and the proposals, if any, he has to ensure that appropriate names are used in future. [10547/98]

The Minister for the Environment and Local Government has no function in relation to the naming of particular housing developments. However, my Department has advised local authorities on a number of occasions that established local names should be used in preference to names which have no local connotations to ensure that local topographical and historic placenames are preserved and do not fall into disuse. The adequacy of powers available to local authorities in relation to the naming of estates is being considered in the context of the current review of planning legislation.
