Vol. 490 No. 7

Written Answers. - Bovine Diseases.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

110 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will provide special facilities in relation to the 30 day brucellosis testing of heifers for animals exhibited at agricultural shows around the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10977/98]

Because of the continuing difficult brucellosis situation and following extended discussions in the animal health forum, a number of remedial measures, including a 30 day pre-movement test for all female cattle and bulls aged over 12 months being moved into or out of holdings, other than direct to a slaughter premises, were introduced with effect from 23 February 1998.

All parties involved in the negotiations accept the veterinary advice that these arrangements are essential at this time, particularly in the context of the potential threat to our beef and dairy industries.

In the circumstances, I regret that it is not possible to make any concessions on this matter.
