Question:

168 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will give a breakdown by gender and age group of the number of suicides in each of the provinces in 1997. [11000/98]

Data on mortality are routinely published in the annual and quarterly reports on vital statistics compiled by the Central Statistics Office. The most recent year for which figures are available is 1996. The numbers of deaths from suicide in 1996 in each of the provinces by age group and sex are set out in table 1 below. Figures for January to September 1997 are provided in table 2.
