Vol. 490 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

John Perry

Question:

215 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the grants available from his Department for a student (details supplied) in County Sligo who has won a scholarship to a United States university (details supplied) to study for a four year degree in sports medicine. [11173/98]

My Department does not operate a scheme of grants to assist individuals who are pursuing sports related third level education abroad. Schemes operated by my Department are targeted essentially at sports activities, and costs directly associated with such activities.

In addition to assisting national governing bodies of sport with the cost of international competition and training, I recently introduced a new system of supports for individual high performance athletes, to be known as the international carding scheme, to replace the outstanding sportspersons grant scheme which operated from 1986 to 1997. The new scheme will not alone provide for the possibility of direct financial support to individual athletes towards meeting certain training expenses, but will also enable "carded" athletes to access, free of charge, a network of sport science and medical services, a career planning and counselling service, and training facilities.
