Question:

266 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the extent to which he proposes to review and, where necessary, improve and update the facilities in national schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11315/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 262 and 266 together.

My Department does not have detailed information on the standard of facilities in every one of the country's 3,300 primary schools. There is an ongoing requirement to update facililities in school buildings in order to deliver the curriculum in the best possible manner. My Department responds to this requirement within the resources available.

This year, the Government has allocated £39.3 million capital funding for primary schools, which represents an increase of 42 per cent on the equivalent 1997 allocation. This substantially increased allocation will make a significant impact in improving primary school facilities. The renewal of sub-standard accommodation at primary school level is a key priority for this Government.

Proper maintenance of existing facilities is vital to preserve the standard of accommodation at a school. The maintenance of existing facilities at a primary school is a matter in the first instance for the school management and falls to be funded from the annual capitation grant. In addition, a devolved grant scheme is in operation under which each national school is paid an annual capital grant of £2,000 plus £9 per pupil, which can be spent on improving existing facilities.
