Vol. 490 No. 7

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

268 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science his plans, if any, he has for improved pupil-teacher ratios; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11317/98]

An Action Programme for the Millennium contains a commitment to give primary education a clear priority in allocating resources. In this context, the retention of the 1998 demographic dividend within the primary sector, combined with an overall reduction in the number of pupils entering primary schools, will contribute to lowering the pupil-teacher ratio at primary school level.

The question of reducing the pupil-teacher ratio at second level will be considered in the context of available resources.
