Vol. 490 No. 7

Written Answers. - Education Charter.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

46 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will introduce an education charter which would set out statutory rights and rights to service from the education system for parents and children. [11116/98]

The purpose of the Education (No. 2) Bill, 1997, is to place the central features of the education system at first and second levels on a statutory footing.

The Bill makes a number of specific provisions to protect and promote parents' rights in the education system and to ensure their continued participation in their children's education.

The needs of students are the central focus of the Bill. All its provisions are aimed at improving the service available to them.
