Vol. 490 No. 7

Written Answers. - Relationships and Sexuality Programme.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

65 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools expected to implement the relationships and sexuality education programme in the 1998-9 academic year; the number of schools where introductory meetings on the programme have been held for parents; if he has satisfied himself with the rate of progress on the programme; if the programme will be taught as a separate subject rather than being included with, for instance, religion; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11067/98]

I would expect that the majority of schools will be implementing a relationships and sexuality education programme during the 1998-9 academic year.

To date, 76 parent information seminars have been organised through the education centre network in various locations throughout the country. On average, these seminars have been attended by between 100 and 350 parents. Further seminars have been and will be organised by individual schools for their parent body. This work is ongoing.

I am satisfied with the progress that is now being made regarding the introduction of RSE. In this context, the issue of the recent newsletter to all schools and the ongoing work of the full-time RSE support service have helped move matters forward.

It is intended that RSE will be taught in schools as part of the social, personal and health education programme, SPHE.
