Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Question:

327 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to introduce legislation to outlaw the practice of local authorities charging a fee for applicants who wish to apply to a local authority for accommodation; if so, the timescale involved before this legislative initiative can be introduced; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11645/98]

Charges of the kind referred to by the Deputy are discretionary and may only be introduced with the consent of the elected members of the local authority. I have no plans to interfere in this discretion.
