Question:

409 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of murders committed in the State for each month from July 1997 to April 1998; the number of arrests made in connection with these murders; and the number of people convicted in this regard. [11805/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the information sought by the Deputy is as follows:

I am further informed that of the 31 cases recorded, detections have been made in 26 cases. Proceedings have commenced in 22 of these cases. No convictions have been obtained to date.
Eighty arrests have been made in connection with the investigation of the cases in question.
It should be noted that the statistics supplied are provisional and, as such, are subject to change.
