Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Ivan Yates

Question:

446 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if his Department received a submission from an organisation (details supplied) in relation to its competing in the world championship at the end of May 1998; and if he will procure funding directly for the organisation in view of the heavy costs involved. [11843/98]

Under the schemes administered by my Department, funding is provided to recognised national governing bodies of sport to assist with their overall running costs, including where appropriate, attendance at international events. As the Irish Pool Association is not recognised as a national governing body by my Department or by the Irish Sports Council, I regret that I am unable to provide funding under the scheme in response to the association's recent submission to me in relation to participation in the world championship at the end of May 1998.

The association has been advised of the position.
