Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Donal Carey

Question:

448 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has received an application from Ennis Urban District Council for grant aid to develop the local swimming pool; if so, the amount sought; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11893/98]

Proposals from Clare County Council to build a swimming pool in Ennis were submitted to the Department of the Environment and Local Government in 1996. The estimated cost of the project is £2,630,000, of which grant-aid of £1,315,000 has been sought.

The swimming pool programme recently transferred to my Department. There is provision of £4 million in 1998 for the construction and refurbishment of swimming pools. This provision is fully committed to projects under construction or fully approved and on which work is expected to commence shortly. However, I will give every consideration to the Ennis proposals in the context of additional funding being made available in 1999.
