Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Physical Education Facilities.

Seán Ryan

Question:

494 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position on the application from St. Joseph's secondary school, Rush, County Dublin for grant aid towards the construction of a physical education facility in view of the fact that the school has two trained PE teachers yet the nearest facility is at the local GAA club over a mile away and is of no benefit to the school during the day; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11928/98]

An application has recently been received for the provision of PE facilities at St. Joseph's secondary school in Rush, County Dublin.

The question of providing physical education facilities at this school can only be considered in the context of the capital available for post-primary building purposes generally. Because of the huge demand for additional classroom accommodation in schools throughout the country, I am not in a position at this stage to state when physical education facilities will be provided in this particular case. However, the Deputy can be assured that this application will continue to be reviewed in the light of available resources and competing priorities.
