Written Answers. - Computer Programmes.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

104 Mr. Quinn asked the Taoiseach the progress to date in ensuring that each agency within his remit is year 2000 compliant; the cost of work done so far; the estimated cost of full compliance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12150/98]

My Department has requested bodies under its aegis to address their year 2000 issues as a matter of urgency. Work is ongoing in these offices to determine the total extent of the changes required and the costs arising. The following table details the costs identified to date and cost of the work done so far.

My Department reports to the Government's Year 2000 Monitoring Committee on behalf of NESF, NESC, the Information Society Commission, National Partnership Centre, the Tribunal Offices in Dublin Castle and the All-Party Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution. While the question does not refer directly to all of the above mentioned offices or to the Law Offices, I am including a report on their progress to date.

1. The I.T. systems in use in the National Economic and Social Forum are non-compliant. This matter will be addressed in the context of new staffing and accommodation arrangements for the Forum.

Estimated costs of £60,000 may be subsumed into a wider IT development programme which is under consideration.

Office of the Attorney General

£30,000 - £50,000

Costs identified relate to both year 2000 and euro compliance.

Chief State Solicitor's Office

Any year 2000 issues are being resolved as part of a wider IT development programme.

Director of Public Prosecution

One application uses a 2 digit year code and is scheduled for replacement in 1999 as part of a wider IT development programme.

Tribunal Offices, Dublin Castle

£1,452

All IT systems have been tested and a report will be available in the near future. It is not envisaged that the year 2000 problem will have a major significance on the systems in use.

All Party Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution

nil return

No costs have been identified to date. It is likely that any year 2000 issues will be resolved as part of the normal IT systems replacement programme.
