Vol. 491 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fisheries Development.

John Bruton

Question:

160 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will confirm the extension of the activities of the Boyne fisheries manager; if he will allocate resources to the Eastern Fisheries Board to ensure that the Boyne is restored as a first class fisheries area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11681/98]

I have announced a further phase of grant-aid for this project under the tourism angling measure (TAM). The grant-aid will extend the employment of the Boyne fisheries manager for a further year, and brings the total funding for this project to £98,000.

The fisheries manager post is a component project of the Boyne Valley integrated development plan. The task of the manager is to develop the potential of a pilot stretch of the river for tourist anglers. His particular responsibilities are to identify the fisheries product in the Boyne catchment, to produce information material on the fishery and to work closely with the other agencies and individuals involved in achieving the objectives of the integrated development plan.
