Vol. 491 No. 5

Written Answers. - UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Richard Bruton

Question:

33 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, he has to meet the Union Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. [12406/98]

I am always ready to meet the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs. Mary Robinson, whenever an issue arises which requires discussion between us. More specifically, I hope to meet the High Commissioner in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in the autumn to discuss matters of mutual concern on the assembly's agenda. I will, of course, take the opportunity to assure the High Commissioner of Ireland's ongoing support for her work.

The Deputy may be aware that the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Deputy O'Donnell, has met with the High Commissioner in Geneva on several occasions and most recently when Mrs. Robinson addressed the Department of Foreign Affairs Inaugural NGO Forum on Human Rights in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham in March. In addition, my Department maintains regular contact with the Office of the High Commissioner in Geneva.
