Vol. 491 No. 5

Written Answers. - Amsterdam Treaty.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

44 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of copies of the Treaty of Amsterdam distributed to public buildings; and his views on whether the document can be readily accessed by members of the public. [10966/98]

The Department of Foreign Affairs distributed copies of the Treaty of Amsterdam to every public library in the State, of which there are approximately 300. The Department also liaised closely with the Government Publications Sales Office, which is the agent in Ireland of the Office for Official Publications of the European Communities, to ensure that copies of the treaty were available at all times for purchase by members of the public. In addition, the Treaty of Amsterdam was made available on the website of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

I am satisfied that the Treaty of Amsterdam was readily accessible to members of the public in advance of the referendum, and remains so today.
