Vol. 491 No. 5

Written Answers. - Persons in Detention.

Tony Gregory

Question:

110 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a detention centre (details supplied) in Dublin 1 referred a person to a community training workshop without indicating that the person was violent and dangerous; if he will ensure that there is no recurrence of this; and if the person concerned should now be in custody. [12525/98]

I understand that the decision to refer the boy in question to the Community Training Workshop was taken following detailed discussions between the management of the detention centre and the management of the workshop. I further understand that in the course of these discussions, the management of the workshop were fully advised of the boy's case history and behaviour. The decision to place the boy at the workshop was based on an assessment that it offered the best prospect of rehabilitation for the boy in question.

I am also advised that inquiries made by the detention centre indicate that there has been no evidence of violent or dangerous behaviour on the part of the boy while attending the workshop.

I understand that the boy in question has now been placed in the care of his mother to facilitate his full-time attendance at the workshop which is close to his home.
