Vol. 492 No. 4

Written Answers. - Shannon Catchment Eel Stocks.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

109 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the locations where the captured elvers in each of the years from 1995 to date were released in the Shannon catchment area. [14436/98]

The ESB owns the fishing rights in the Shannon catchment and the management of the eel stocks in the system is carried out by the ESB in co-operation with the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board. I am advised by the ESB that a comprehensive list is not available as the planting consists of numerous small catches over a considerable period of time. The ESB advises that the bulk of the stocking was undertaken in Lough Derg following scientific advice that upward migration would occur naturally and I understand that this advice has been vindicated by survey results.
