Question:

279 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the EU directives coming wholly or partly under the auspices of his Department that were not fully implemented as of 1 June 1998; the reference number and subject matter of each directive; the deadline for implementation set out in the directive; whether it is proposed to implement the directive by means of a Bill or by statutory instrument; and when it is proposed to implement the directive. By means of the Parental Leave Bill, 1998.

In accordance with Section 1(2) of the Bill, the proposed Act will come into operation on 3 December 1998.

An additional period of 6 months has been obtained by Ireland in which to transpose the Directive.

In the context of the preparation of a revised Equal Status Bill, consideration will be given to the necessity and appropriateness of including in the Bill a provisions to enable the State comply with the Directive.

It is envisaged that the revised Equal Status Bill will be published in 1998.
