Question:330 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a remedial teacher in 1998 to Kilkeary national school, Nenagh, County Tipperary, in view of the fact that the board of management and parents association for this school have been making representations to his Department and feel they have a strong case for a remedial teacher in view of the number of pupils attending the school who would benefit greatly from this appointment. Question:355 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a remedial teacher to a number of primary schools (details supplied) in counties Leitrim and Sligo for the school year commencing September 1998. [14318/98]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 327, 330, 343, 347 and 355 together.
My capacity to allocate additional remedial teacher posts in any given year is dependent on resource availability and the level of competing demand from other special needs areas. I have to determine priorities and allocate available resources to best effect.
I am currently reviewing provision across the special needs area, including the remedial area, to ensure that all available resources are deployed as effectively as possible.
I can assure the Deputies that the needs of the schools to which they refer will be considered in the context of any additional remedial teacher allocations which may be undertaken for the forthcoming school year.
