Vol. 492 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Michael Creed

Question:

331 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide school transport for 13 pupils to a primary school (details supplied) in County Cork. [14047/98]

An application for the establishment of a service for the pupils in question was recently examined by my Department, but was refused on the grounds of cost, inconvenience to other pupils and that the road was unsuitable for the large bus on this route.

Bus Éireann has advised that the large vehicle serving the primary school in question also operates a post-primary service. To provide transport on the existing vehicle would inconvenience post-primary pupils by some 20 to 25 minutes. These pupils are currently picked up at 7.45 a.m. and it is understood locally that any deterioration in their level of service would be unacceptable.

The possibility of providing a separate service was also examined, but regrettably my Department found the cost involved to be prohibitive.
