Vol. 492 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

367 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that increases in school numbers far outreach all available classroom space at Virginia vocational school, Virginia, County Cavan; if his attention has further been drawn to an offer from Virginia Show Society of a large hall convenient to the vocational school on a long-term lease free of charge which could be divided into a number of class rooms at little cost and so alleviate the overcrowding in the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14450/98]

I am aware that pupil numbers have increased in Virginia vocational school in the last few years. Applications have been received from County Cavan Vocational Education Committee for additional temporary accommodation to meet immediate needs and for permanent accommodation in respect of the school. These applications are under consideration in my Department at present and will be processed as soon as possible.

I can confirm also that, as indicated by the Deputy, the VEC has been approached by the Virginia Show Society with an offer of accommodation for school use. I understand that the committee is appointing an architect to examine and report on the suitability of the building for conversion to classrooms.
