Vol. 492 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prison Medical Service.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

44 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Health and Children the services which he is providing for heroin addicted prisoners in each of the State prisons; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14242/98]

As the Deputy will be aware, the administration of the prison service including the prison medical service is a matter for my colleague the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. The provision of treatment services for drug misusers would be a matter for him in the first instance. I am aware that, by arrangement with the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Eastern Health Board consultant psychiatrists working in substance abuse provide services to Mountjoy Prison on a sessional basis.
