Question:

124 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine ine and Natural Resources the amount of fund ing, if any, put in place to assist in the prevention of coastal erosion at Doohoma, Geesala, Ballina, County Mayo. [14808/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 123 and 124 together.

Grant aid has been made available for two of the four priority coast protection projects submit ted by Mayo County Council for consideration under the Operational Programme for Environ mental Services 1994-99. Given the very limited resources available for coast protection under the operational programme, I regret it is unlikely to be possible to provide further grant aid to Mayo County Council this year. Doolough Pier and Doohama were not among the priority coast pro tection proposals submitted to my Department by Mayo County Council.

Question:

125 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will con sent to the removal of stones along the shore line where the land of a person (details supplied) in County Mayo which abuts the sea in order to put down a barrier with the stones and rocks from the shore between his land and the sea in view of the fact that his land is dimin ishing with coastal erosion and the fact that he has received no help previously from the State in this regard. [14809/98]

I would be prepared to consider an application which is submitted to me proposing the removal of stones, rocks or other beach material from the State-owned foreshore, in accordance with the provisions of the Foreshore Acts 1933 and 1992. Perhaps the person would indicate to my Department — coastal zone administration division — what exactly he is proposing. My decision on the application would follow a thorough examin ation of the case by my Department's specialist advisers.
