Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

213 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will have investigations made into the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork was discharged from St. Mary's Hospital, Cork, on the eve of surgery on the grounds that he would not receive proper post-operative care in Fort Mitchell, Spike Island Prison, where he is serving his sentence; the communication, if any, that took place between the prison authorities and the hospital before that decision was made; and if he will ensure that the necessary medical care is extended to him in view of the fact that he may suffer permanent damage to his health because of the situation, particularly in view of the fact that his former place of employment informed him that his work performance was hindered by the damage to his leg. Question:

214 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the communication, if any, that took place between the Southern Health Board management and the prison authorities of Spike Island Prison before a person (details supplied) in County Cork was discharged from St. Mary's Hospital, Cork, on the eve of surgery on the grounds that he would not receive adequate post-operative care; and if he will have investigations made in this regard. [14899/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 213 and 214 together.

The provision of hospital services in St. Mary's Hospital, Cork, is the statutory responsibility of the Southern Health Board in the first instance. I have asked the chief executive of the board to have this matter investigated and to reply directly to the Deputy.
