Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Summer Jobs Scheme.

Michael Ring

Question:

264 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the reason a person (details supplied) in County Mayo does not qualify under the student summer jobs scheme in view of the fact that she is one of four siblings, two of whom attend third level without the assistance of grants or other State benefits. [14916/98]

The purpose of the students' summer jobs scheme is to provide income support during the summer holiday period for the less well-off third level students who are disqualified from receiving unemployment assistance and are unable to obtain summer work.

In order to qualify for participation in the scheme, students must satisfy a means test which is broadly similar to that currently applying to applicants for unemployment assistance, which takes account of the number of dependants in a family. The person concerned does not qualify as her weekly means exceed the qualifying limit.
