Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Prison Committals.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

300 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proportion of committals to prison on conviction which follow upon convictions in the District Court or upon appeal from that Court to the Circuit Court. [14777/98]

In 1990 approximately 86 per cent of committals to prison on conviction were from the District Court. A comparable figure for committals on appeal from the Circuit Court is not available. Figures for later years are also not available and the resources which would be necessary to extract it from manual records could not be justified at present.
