Question:

354 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when funding will be sanctioned to carry out necessary urgent repairs to a primary school (details supplied) in County Mayo in view of the fact that the parents of the children are totally opposed to any rationalisation locally of their school. [15120/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 327 and 354 together.

My Department explored the option of amalgamation of the schools referred to by the Deputy as a possible alternative to the costly refurbishment of both schools. On the basis of the opposition demonstrated by one of the schools, my Department considers that an amalgamation is not an acceptable solution to the provision of primary education in the area.

The question of providing funding towards renovating the schools must now be examined. This will be considered in the context of existing capital commitments, the financial resources available to my Department and other priority projects. A decision will be conveyed to the school management as quickly as possible.

My Department has no record of an application for grant assistance towards renovating the school referred to by the Deputy.
