Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

John Perry

Question:

342 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the application for the supplementary grant for a person (details supplied) in County Sligo in view of the fact that he depends on this grant to cover his expenses; if he will make a favourable decision in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14931/98]

Under the terms of the third level student support schemes, the reckonable income for the purposes of the award of a grant is gross income from all sources of the candidate and his or her parents or guardians, where applicable.

The vocational education committees administer the European Social Fund-aided maintenance grants scheme. I understand from Town of Sligo VEC that the reckonable income in the case of the student in question exceeds the reckonable income limit. I regret he is, therefore, ineligible for student support.
