Question:

84 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress, if any, made in relation to the pilot project for the introduction of modern languages into primary schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14989/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 32 and 84 together.

Considerable progress has been made in relation to the pilot project for the introduction of modern languages into primary schools and the project will commence in the chosen schools in September 1998.

The 270 schools which have been chosen for inclusion in the pilot project have been formally notified of their selection and the language which they have been selected to teach. It is envisaged that six project leaders will be appointed in the near future. The interviews for these positions have already been held. The duties of the project leaders will include assisting and advising principals and teachers and the implementation of a training programme for teachers.
