Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

51 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether it is easier to score high leaving certificate points in nonscience subjects as against science subjects; if so, the proposals, if any, he has in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14990/98]

I presume the Deputy is referring to the entry system to third-level courses based on the awarding of points to grades obtained in six leaving certificate subjects.

It should be noted that there is a wide variation in the percentage of candidates taking the various subjects and therefore care must be taken in making direct comparisons between the percentage grades obtained in the different subjects for this reason.

The percentages of candidates achieving grades A to C in the science subjects are broadly comparable to those for other subjects.

The Commission on the Points System is currently undertaking a major review of the present entry system to third-level institutions which is based on the results of the leaving certificate examination.
