Vol. 492 No. 7

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Phil Hogan

Question:

57 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Education and Science whether the investigation of the exam leak in Schull, County Cork, has implications for the current leaving certificate examinations and for procedures in future examinations. [14961/98]

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

89 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will put a contingency plan in place to ensure that an alternative paper is available to avoid the recurrence of the Schull Community School debacle; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15018/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 57 and 89 together.

The Deputies will be aware that as a result of inquiries and having assessed the limited nature and duration of the exposure it was decided that the part of the examinations in Irish concerned could proceed for the 59,000 candidates concerned.

This issue will be kept under review. The procedures and arrangements for conducting the examinations are fully reviewed after each exam cycle with a view to making improvements and modifications as appropriate for subsequent examinations. I can assure the Deputies that this review will take full account of the problems referred to by them.
