Vol. 492 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. - Meetings with Semi-State Bodies.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

14 Mr. Quinn asked the Taoiseach the recent meetings, if any, he has had with the chairpersons of State companies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14947/98]

As I said in reply to a similar question on 22 April, the appropriate Ministers and parent Departments interact periodically or frequently with the managements of semi-State bodies under their remit. I am kept informed of key developments and plans, including through the decision-making processes of Cabinet.

I have not had any meetings recently with a group of chairpersons of State or semi-State companies, but I remain open to holding such meetings as the need arises.

Does the Taoiseach accept it was the practice of previous Taoisigh to hold such meetings? Does he see any merit in resurrecting that practice?

Not particularly. I attended many of those meetings in the past. Consultations take place through Ministers and where necessary I meet directly with the individuals concerned. I tend to meet some people more often than others. For example, I meet people from the IDA, the NTMA and others on a regular basis, but not as a group.
