Vol. 493 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda and Prison Officer Training.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

185 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the degree to which refresher courses are available on a regular basis to members of the Garda Síochána and prison officers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15568/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are committed to ensuring that all members of An Garda Síochána receive adequate training and education on an ongoing basis.

In addition to the training facilities available in the Garda College, in-service training schools operate in each Garda division providing training in current legislation and Garda policies and procedures.
I am also informed by the Garda authorities that the majority of gardaí attend an in-service training school at least once a year and additional specialised training is provided to gardaí working in certain specialised areas
The Garda authorities are satisfied that adequate in-service training is provided to all members. The situation is, however, constantly monitored and reviewed with a view to improving matters in this regard. In so far as the prison service is concerned, I am informed that refresher courses covering a wide range of activities are ongoing and availed of by most officers. Examples of the types of activities concerned include control and restraint technique, training in short duration breathing apparatus, physical education and health and safety. In addition, training and development in suicide awareness is provided.
