Vol. 493 No. 2

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Service.

Liz McManus

Question:

189 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education and Science the provisions, if any, there are for orthodontic consultant supervised continuation of care for the 1,000 patients who are under orthodontic treatment following the retirement of the Professor of Orthodontics, who was the only orthodontic consultant in the Cork University Dental Hospital; and the orthodontic qualifications of the current head of orthodontics. [15542/98]

The National University of Ireland, Cork, has made an appointment to the post of lecturer-consultant orthodontist who will take up duty later in the year. In the interim, four orthodontists have been employed to provide full services to both patients and students.

Orthodontics is now part of a restructured department entitled "oral health and development", the head of which has consultant status within the Department. The filling of the post of professor of orthodontics is currently under consideration by the university.
