Seán Power

Question:

118 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans or proposals, if any, he has in relation to dealing with the issue of fraud offences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15359/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 68 and 118 together.

I have obtained the approval of the Government for the drafting of legislation which will radically reform the law on fraud and dishonesty. The Criminal Justice (Fraud Offences) Bill will draw on the report of the advisory committee on fraud and also the Law Reform Commission's report on the law relating to dishonesty, and will consolidate and update existing offences as well as developing new offences to deal with the currency day realities of fraud, such as white collar crime and computer-related crime. The proposed legislation deals with very complex issues. I expect to be in a position to publish it as early as possible in 1999.
