Vol. 493 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Training.

Derek McDowell

Question:

74 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the training of gardaí in dealing with domestic violence includes violence perpetrated against men; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15443/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a comprehensive training and education programme is provided to all gardaí in the area of domestic violence. Training is provided at both student/probationer level and in-service level. Members are instructed in relation to current legislation and garda procedures when dealing with reported cases of domestic violence.

There are no distinctions made either in legislation or garda training between male and female victims of domestic violence. The Garda authorities inform me that all reported incidents of domestic violence are investigated with equal professionalism and consideration, whatever the sex of the victim.
