Vol. 493 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Question:

76 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the additional steps, if any, he will take including the use of a private security firm in view of recent violent incidents in an area (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15476/98]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the areas referred to by the Deputy are included in those areas which have been targeted by Operation Dóchas and Operation Cleanstreet.

The policing arrangements for both areas are reviewed regularly and additional resources are deployed, to deal with any problems when identified.

The Garda authorities have informed me that the recent incidents, referred to by the Deputy, are currently being investigated and that there is no evidence to suggest that these incidents are drug related.

The Garda authorities have assured me that they are satisfied that the areas referred to are receiving the appropriate Garda attention.
