Vol. 493 No. 2

Written Answers. - Consultant Appointments.

Louis J. Belton

Question:

140 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to appoint a consultant geneticist in view of the fact that there is one position of this nature in this country. [15500/98]

My Department has recently given approval to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin for the commencement of the recruitment process for a second consultant medical geneticist at the National Centre for Medical Genetics which is located at the hospital. This application is being considered by Comhairle na nOspidéal which has a statutory function to regulate the number and type of consultant medical appointments. The hospital authorities have assured me that the appointment process will be proceeded with as quickly as possible once formal approval to the application has been issued by Comhairle na nOspidéal.
