Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Economic and Monetary Union.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

123 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the extent, if any, to which non-participation by the United Kingdom in the EMU and euro is affecting trade between this country and the United Kingdom; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16319/98]

I am not aware that there is any evidence at this time to suggest that non-participation by the United Kingdom in the EMU is affecting trade between Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The latest trade statistics for 1998, which cover the two month period of January and February, show that exports to the sterling area increased by 20 per cent to £1.5 billion and imports from there increased by 11 per cent to £1.5 billion. This performance follows substantial increases in 1997 when exports to the sterling area for the full year increased by 14 per cent to £8.5 billion and imports increased by 12 per cent to £8.7 billion.
