Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fish Kills.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

144 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has satisfied himself that the reporting procedures in place in relation to fish kills in our inland waterways are sufficient to ensure that all fish kills are reported for collation by the Marine Institute's Fisheries Research Centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16049/98]

I am generally speaking satisfied with the current reporting system whereby the central and regional fisheries boards feed into the Marine Institute's comprehensive database on fish kills which is updated on an ongoing basis and is the base line data for an annual report on fish kills and causes of fish kills. The boards are uniquely well placed to provide these reports, given their central role in monitoring water quality and in investigating and following up fish kill incidents. I have asked the Marine Institute to advise on the scope or need to further enhance and expand reporting systems and data collation.
