Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

147 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the proposals, if any, there are for legislation before the Government to address the depletion of fish stocks of the east coast particularly in view of unregulated taking of razorfish stocks. [16053/98]

Question:

148 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the extent of the research carried out to date in anticipation of the implementation of a quota system relative to stocks of razorfish, in particular, in our east coast and in Irish Sea fisheries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16054/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 147 and 148 together.

While the initial report on the razor clam fishery has been prepared for Bord Iascaigh Mhara, further research on a range of issues, including the quality and location of stocks, is necessary. My Department is working in co-operation with Bord Iascaigh Mhara and the Marine Institute to put in place research strategies and measures which will facilitate the conservation and sustainable utilisation of razor clam resources.

In the meantime, and in line with the precautionary principle, I am considering as a matter of priority fishery management measures aimed at preventing over-exploitation of stocks.
